Technical Requirements

File format is MOV or MP4 (Quick Time) Video Format in High Definition 16:9

Video Encoding Format

  1. Please review these following 2 videos for information on encoding videos: Learn the Basics of Video Encoding and How to Compress Video for YouTube.
  2. A lossless file format (Example; Apple Pro Res 422 or equivalent)
  3. 1080P (1920x1080) or 720P (1280x720)
  4. Bitrate 10,000-20,000
  5. FPS Framerate 24 (23.97) or 30 (29.97)

Audio Encoding Format

  1. Audio should be balanced, without audio distortion or peaking
  2. Codec: ACC-LC (Advanced Audio Codec)
  3. Data rate: 320kbit/s
  4. Sample rate: 48kHz

General Guidelines

  1. ALL videos are 4 (FOUR) minutes or less
  2. Teacher support/guidance is encouraged (i.e., teachers are allowed to help with filming and editing. However, the concept and direction of the videos should be student-driven)
  3. Videos from classroom projects are also welcomed (i.e., commercials from Media Literacy/Health/Online Safety activities, etc.)
  4. Students are allowed to create their videos outside of the school and school hours (i.e., they can film and edit at home)
  5. Each school can submit a maximum of 5 (FIVE) videos (i.e., teacher(s) should review each video and select the TOP 5 from their school that they would like to be considered for the Film Festival)
  6. Please review the criteria that the committee will be using (at the bottom)
  7. Please ensure that videos have appropriate content & language: Some Examples of INAPPROPRIATE content: foul language of any kind, violence, other than occasional comic violence, blood and/or gore, sexual references or imagery - weapons of any kind, including brightly-coloured toys and replicas, mature themes (please use your professional judgement, consider the grade division (k-5 & 6-8), films that contain footage of persons who have not given explicit consent to be filmed, copyrighted music (encourage students to use royalty free music), copyrighted video (e.g., video "borrowed" from other sources, like YouTube) *The Peel Student Film Festival Committee (Elementary) reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of content *
  8. Schools are responsible for their own transportation and coverage for the day of the festival (i.e., ask your administration about supply coverage and arranging transportation)
  9. Each school is to have at least ONE teacher contact for the Film Festival’s committee to contact
  10. Submissions are due: Wednesday, March 2, 2017
  11. Film Festival’s committee will reply to successful school submissions by: Friday, April 7, 2017
  12. Successful school submissions RSVP with total number of students and teachers by: Wednesday, April 19, 2017
  13. Date of the film festival: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Cineplex Odeon: Orion’s Gate

Entrants are encouraged to create productions that consist entirely of original material, including music, graphics, visuals etc. However we understand that this may not always be feasible in a school environment. Therefore, please endeavour to credit all copyrighted projects.

2016 Cineplex Odeon Venue

This year's Elementary Division will be screened at Cineplex Odeon at 20 Biscayne Crescent Brampton ON L6W 4S1 at intersection of Steeles Avenue East and Rutherford Road South.
